Program Update
Exhibit Hall
10:00 am 3-12-10

The Datalys Center is a non-profit that has taken over the management of the NCAA’s Injury Surveillance Program. The injury surveillance program has a long history of supporting rule and policy changes that improve student athlete health and safety.  As part of this effort, Datalys has pursued a number of new initiatives that we believe make participation in the injury surveillance program easier and more beneficial for athletic trainers.

During our presentation at 10:00am in the exhibit hall, Datalys will be discussing several of our new initiatives which include our ability to work with “paper-based” record keeping schools, receive data through several different commercial vendors, and provide customized conference wide reporting back to participating conferences (if enough individual schools participate).

Changes to the GLATA Consitution & Bylaws PDF Print E-mail
January 31, 2010

Dear GLATA Members:

As many of you are aware, the GLATA Executive Board charged a task force with re-writing the associations Constitution and Bylaws. After about 2 years of work, we are ready to present the new Bylaws to the association. In order for the new Bylaws to be adopted, the membership will vote on this on March 12, 2010 at the GLATA Annual Winter Business Meeting. I urge your attendance at this event.

The task force:  Julie Rochester (GLATA President), Mark Gibson (NATA District IV Director); Tory Lindley (GLATA President-Elect), Ann Berry (former GLATA Vice-President), Mark Stoessner (GLATA Vice-President).

Why was this task force was formed?  It became evident, that as a working document, the old GLATA Constitution and Bylaws were confusing and contradictory to one another. There were also some cases in which the Bylaws were not appropriately updated following action items (motions) that occurred during meetings of the GLATA Executive Board. Furthermore, much of the language contained in the old Bylaws is language that belongs in a Policy and Procedure document. As such, the task force was needed to review and revise these documents to accurately reflect current practices of the association.

Some changes you will notice.

  1. You will see that in the NEW Bylaws, we have combined the old Constitution and Bylaws into one document. After a bit of research, we found this to be common practice. This approach will contribute to better clarity and understanding of the document by the membership.
  2. The NEW Bylaws are laid out according to Robert’s Rules of Order.
  3. The LANGUAGE throughout the NEW Bylaws is consistent.
  4. The Executive Board consists of the 6 elected officers and the 6 state representatives. There is no longer an Executive Council.
  5. The Executive Committee consists of the 6 elected officers.
  6. Standing committees are those chaired by a GLATA elected officer.
  7. Special committees do not have a chair, rather they have a coordinator that is appointed by the GLATA President and approved by the board. The only exception to this is the Student Senate, which will still have a chair.

Keep in mind that this document cannot easily be amended. The only sections of the Bylaws that can be amended by the GLATA Executive Board are Articles V, VI, VII, VIII and IX. All other amendments must be voted on by the membership. You will see that the heart of the original Constitution of the association remains embedded in this new document.

This document will be voted on by the membership as it reads today. It cannot be amended on the floor during our business session. National Sports Safety in Secondary Schools Benchmark (N4SB) Study
Dear Athletic Trainer,

The National Athletic Trainers Association has commissioned the Athletic Training Program at A.T. The National Sports Safety in Secondary Schools Benchmark (N4SB) study is an important first step in identifying how the health and safety of student-athletes can be improved.

We invite you to participate in this short survey, which is being distributed to athletic trainers across all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Please follow this link to the survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5M3DCFW  Simply "copy and paste" this address into the address bar of your Internet Browser.

Your participation in this research is strictly voluntary. Furthermore, your response (or decision not to respond) will not negatively affect you. Support Athletic Trainers' Equal Access to Medicare Act of 2009 (ATEAM) (H.R. 1137)

Contact your member of the House of Representatives to join our efforts!

The Athletic Trainers' Equal Access to Medicare Act of 2009 (HR 1137) has been introduced into the House of Representatives.  This bill would improve patient access to athletic trainers, allow physician choice of a wider range of qualified health professionals, and restore the ability of athletic trainers to work incident-to a physician.  Contact your member of the House today and encourage them to co-sponsor H.R. 1137.
